About the event
For the first time in Store studio, the public will experience a work by American Florence Price. She was the first African-American woman to compose a symphony (1931), and she has a large output that should be discovered by more people. However, the soloist in the piano concerto is not new to KORK. Marianna Shirinyan is one of KORK's favourites, and with her virtuoso and sensitive interpretations she has been a soloist in several piano concerts. Besides Price, we get the well-known symphony "From the New World", written by a Czech in New York. Although Dvořák was brought across the pond to build American musical life, it was the music that was already there that inspired him, among other things the music of the Slavs, negro spirituals. The work was chosen by conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson. She is first and foremost a distinguished conductor, but she was also the first woman of color to win an international conductor's prize. As a conductor and organizer, she works for greater diversity in music, including with her own Black Pearl Orchestra.
